In August, at Monterey (US), this superb 1972 Maserati Ghibli SS 4.9 Coupe will heading to auction through RM Sotheby's. Named after a hot wind of the Libyan desert, this model is the first version produced by Maserati with its low and long recognizable nose.
History of the Maserati Ghibli
There are three differente version of the Maserati Ghibli, this SS 4.9 Coupe by Ghia is the first one, a V8 grand tourer produced between 1966 and 1973. The Ghibli was presented in 1966 at the Turin Motor Show and was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, Italation automobile designer working at Carrozzeria Ghia SpA. This Italian company Ghia was founded by Giacinto Ghia in 1916 in Turin (Italy) specialized in design and coachbuilding.
The Ghibli SS was released in 1969 and becomes one of the best Italian automobiles of its times with the Lamborghini Miura and the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta.
Technical specification
With its 4,930 cc DOHC 90-degree V-8 engine with five-speed manual gearbox, the Ghibli S delivers 335 hp for a top speed of 280 kmh (one of the fastest Maserati road car ever produced). Only 1,190 Ghibli coupes were produced in both 4.7 and 4.9 liter engine.
