Callejones sin salida es un libro de cuentos cortos impregnados de personajes carcomidos por la soledad, la tristeza, la desesperanza… Rodeados de infortunios, eventos traumáticos y en ocasiones desgracias que causan un daño irreparable en sus vidas, con las que tienen que lidiar del mejor modo en que sepan, si acaso deciden hacerlo.

Claro que estoy hablando desde mi punto de vista, ya que la narración es tan neutra e impecable que le deja de tarea al lector juzgar lo que verdaderamente ocurre en el libro. Es al lector al que le toca decidir desde dónde enfocar todo lo que estos cuentos retratan.

Callejones sin salida is a book of short stories impregnated with characters eaten away by loneliness, sadness, hopelessness... Surrounded by misfortunes, traumatic events and sometimes misfortunes that cause irreparable damage in their lives, with which they have to deal in the best way they know how, if they decide to do so.

Of course, I am speaking from my point of view, since the narration is so neutral and impeccable that it is left to the reader to judge what really happens in the book. It is up to the reader to decide from where to approach all that these tales portray.

Las historias de este libro están ambientadas en Venezuela, por lo que es común, o por lo menos para mí que soy de acá, encontrar sitios conocidos pero descritos de un modo diferente, como si leyera sobre ellos por primera vez. Las frases y palabras utilizadas albergan belleza, pero también un cierto aire oscuro que lo hace atractivo, directo y en ocasiones crudo.

De igual manera las acciones y las costumbres que llevan a cabo los personajes son tan típicas, conocidas o «criollas» que no se escapan a ojos de los venezolanos que lo lean, lo cual le da un toque de realismo al identificar estas costumbres a una historia ya creíble, de personajes con motivaciones realistas, con vidas posibles.

The stories in this book are set in Venezuela, so it is common, or at least for me who am from here, to find familiar places but described in a different way, as if reading about them for the first time. The phrases and words used harbor beauty, but also a certain dark air that makes it attractive, direct and sometimes crude.

Likewise, the actions and customs carried out by the characters are so typical, known or "Creole" that they do not escape the eyes of Venezuelans who read it, which gives a touch of realism by identifying these customs to an already credible story, of characters with realistic motivations, with possible lives.

Como dato curioso menciono que este libro contiene historias transcurridas en sucesos considerados ya como históricos, eventos reales que marcaron la vida de las personas, como lo fue el terremoto de Cumaná, una tragedia ocurrida en el año 1997 que aún es recordada por sus ciudadanos.

La autora de este maravilloso libro se llama Esmeralda Torres, nacida en 1967 en Ciudad Bolívar y erradicada en Cumaná, donde inició su carrera como escritora. Tiene unas cuantas obras literarias: novelas, libros de cuentos, poemario. Participó y ganó en diversos concursos y tengo entendido que en la actualidad trabaja en la biblioteca de Cumaná. Desconozco si este último dato es veraz o todavía válido porque no es mucho lo que se pueda encontrar de ella en internet. No obstante, es una escritora importante para nuestro país.

Nunca había leído un libro de cuentos que estuvieran ambientados en Ciudad Bolívar y Cumaná, lo que despertó mi interés y curiosidad, sobre todo porque soy originaria de la segunda. Sin embargo, no me adentré en estas historias por compromiso, desde el primer cuento que leí descubrí que no era nada difícil hacerlo. Son cuentos envolventes, de temas profundos, escritos de forma impecable, y pese a todos estos elementos que lo hacen una obra magnífica, son cortos y nada pesados de digerir.

Me encantan las historias de este tipo, un tanto lo opuesto a las «historias bonitas» donde todo es perfección; este estilo de la autora que sinceramente no imaginaba encontrar en esta obra. No esperaba todo lo que hallé, pero la sorpresa fue grata y me hizo devorar el libro en poquísimo tiempo. No es nada difícil de continuar o acabarlo, es sumamente sencillo, pero a cambio no te permite quedarte indiferente.

I had never read a book of short stories set in Ciudad Bolivar and Cumana, which aroused my interest and curiosity, especially because I am originally from the latter. However, I did not get into these stories out of commitment, from the first story I read I discovered that it was not difficult to do so. They are involving stories, with deep themes, impeccably written, and despite all these elements that make it a magnificent work, they are short and not at all heavy to digest.

I love stories of this type, somewhat the opposite of the "pretty stories" where everything is perfection; this style of the author I honestly did not imagine to find in this work. I did not expect everything I found, but the surprise was pleasant and made me devour the book in a very short time. It is not at all difficult to continue or finish it, it is extremely simple, but in return it does not allow you to remain indifferent.

En total son 27 cuentos con una historia particular, pero existe la posibilidad de que se puedan conectar con otros, haciendo de este libro algo más genial, si cabe decirlo. El último cuento sirve como final de este primer libro, pero también como el inicio de la segunda parte, que por cierto, no estaba enterada hasta que investigué un poco, demostrando que cada cuento en sí es muy completo.

Espero les haya gustado esta reseña y de ser posible que se animen a leer este libro, de mi parte quiero buscar la continuación y las otras obras de la autora, presiento que de hacerlo no me decepcionaré. ¡Hasta otra publicación!

In total there are 27 tales with a particular story, but there is the possibility that they can be connected with others, making this book even cooler, if that's possible to say. The last tale serves as the end of this first book, but also as the beginning of the second part, which by the way, I wasn't aware of until I did a little research, proving that each tale itself is very complete.
